More than just a tree, the olive is a symbol. It has been a source of inspiration for the greatest artists, sculptors and poets. It remains to this day the “tree of a thousand symbols.”

In ancient writings, the virtues of the olive were extolled :

Longevity, vitality and immortality : this tree is practically eternal. The olive crosses through the centuries and all their trials, always coming unexpectedly and “magically” back to life.

Strength and power : its wood is hard, dense and heavy : in the Odyssey, Homer arms the hand that would kill the Cyclops with an olive stake. As for Hercules, he went to combat bearing an olive wood club.

Fidelity : Penelope and Ulysses had their bed carved from the trunk of an olive tree, and no would-be successor was able to encroach upon the King of Ithaca’s bed during his 25 year absence.

Valor and victory : the first triumphant athletes of the Olympic games were honored with woven crowns of olive twigs.

If it isn’t pruned, an olive tree can reach 10 to 15m in height. Most often, they do not grow more than 3 or 4 meters. An olive tree will grow slowly. In fact, its best fruit doesn’t appear until it has reached the age of 35. The older it gets, the more abundant the harvest. For example, a 12 year-old olive tree will give approximately 3kg of olives per harvest every 2 years. At the age of 20, it will produce 10kg and by 50, between 25 and 30kg.

If you wish to plant an olive grove, you will have to be patient before gathering the fruit. Don’t forget that this Mediterranean tree requires a temperature between 15° and 25° C and can be damaged by cold below 7°C.

If you honor the birth of a child in your family by planting a tree, the olive, for all of the reasons listed here, will be a judicious and symbolic choice.
